We made it through day 1 and had an absolute blast! About halfway
through the ride, I thought to myself, "Man, I gotta do this next year,
too!" 70 miles, over 5:30 hours on bike...Pacific Coast Highway,
Malibu, Santa Monica Pier. Couldn't ask for better scenery or better company.
Map of our route for Day 1.
Before we "officially began" our day, we had a 3 mile ride from the hotel to Giant Bicycles headquarters. A few of us Texans had trouble following the motorcycle escort (the same guys who were the escorts at the USA Pro Cycling Challenge earlier this year, pretty cool!)
Shawna at Giant HQ. You go girl!
The ride officially got underway!
Pacific Coast Hwy 1Rest Stop #1 at 19 miles. Time to eat a banana and hammer bar, get some gatorade and hit the road again.
Erin, a cancer survivor herself (all breast cancer survivors have a pink sleeve, everyone else has green) flew in all the way from Franklin, Indiana by herself to participate.
The route was well marked with pink arrows all the way. Thank you, Malibu Hair Extensions, for this beautiful stretch of road.
Final rest stop at mile 50 or so. (Lunch stop was a quick stop at a small tent, at mile 39).
Love this shot of Stephanie and Shawna. Santa Monica Pier is in the distance.
Where is that dang hotel?
Anyone seen our hotel?
We made it!!
And the icing on the cake was my sister-in-law and nephew drove in from 29 palms to cheer us on!!
Tomorrow we will have our own little cheering section with Urijah and Laura. Yeaa!!! Well, time to get some rest. Rumor has it we ride nearly 80 miles tomorrow.
Let's do this!
